Course Description

The world is changing, and as a result, so are today's classrooms and students. No longer can the teacher-centered instruction of the 20th century address the variety of needs exhibited by 21st century learners. This course will provide general information regarding the characteristics of learners, skills needed for success in today's economy, and specific resources from the book Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Chip and Dan Heath for engaging learners at any grade level, K-16 and beyond.

Each unit is divided into three sections: Readings and Tasks, Activities, and Class Work. Spoiler alert--the activities in this course are taken directly from the book, so if you read the book first, you will already know the "answer" to the activities, and vice versa. You can decide where to start, just know that there is inherent redundancy.

Participants should plan to spend approximately four hours completing each unit.

Required Resources

To complete this course, you will need access to the book,
Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die
by Chip and Dan Heath.

You will also be utilizing a variety of online tools that may or may not be accessible via your school-based Internet connection so you may need Internet access from some other location. If you are unable to access any of the online tools, please contact your course facilitator.

As a side note, while this course is intended to be completed by individuals, participants are encouraged to engage in the course with one or more colleagues. All of the activities need to be submitted individually; however, collaboration and discussion are often where the real meaning-making and practical implementation of the ideas in a text take place.

Participation in this course may provide artifacts for Domain 4e: Growing and Developing Professionally of the SD Framework for Teachers and/or Domain 2: Instructional Leadership of the SD Framework for Effective Principals.
